Platform beds are becoming more and more popular because of their minimalist and modern look, and if you’ve ever considered one, stay tuned- I’m breaking down all the details, answering some FAQ’s, and sharing seven highly rated platform beds for another edition of Savvy Favorites!

What are platform beds?

A platform bed is a bed with a large, rectangular base. The base is usually a raised platform which gives it the appearance of a step. Typically, the base of a platform bed has wooden slats that support the mattress, making there no need for a box spring.

Do you need a box spring for a platform bed?

The short answer is no. However, it depends on the style of the platform bed. Most platform beds have wooden slats that support the mattress. That means that you can use any mattress with a platform bed, even those that normally require a box spring.

What is the difference between a regular bed and a platform bed?

The difference between a platform bed and a traditional bed is that you can place a mattress directly on a platform bed without a box spring. A traditional bed will require a box spring and a mattress. Another difference is that traditional beds typically have some space between the floor and the bottom of the bed frame. A platform bed sits directly on the floor, leaving no space.

Pros & advantages of a platform bed:

  • Low to the ground – great for kids or adults who prefer a low bed.
  • No box spring needed. The mattress sits directly on the platform bed.
  • The base provides a very sturdy and solid surface for the mattress.

Cons & disadvantages of a platform bed:

  • Can be expensive since it’s such a big piece of furniture.
  • They take up more space than a traditional bed frame.
  • Low to the ground- might not be suitable for everyone.
  • No storage underneath the bed- although some platform beds have hidden storage built-in.
  • Some platform beds are upholstered, so some upkeep and cleaning has to happen regularly.

How to decorate with a platform bed:

  • A platform bed will take up more space in your bedroom than a traditional bed frame, so first, make sure you have enough room to accommodate one. Any easy measurement to remember is to keep at least three feet of space from the side of the bed to a wall, closet, or piece of furniture.
  • Since a platform bed is such a large piece of furniture, try to offset the heavy feeling it has with some daintier side tables. Round tables or ones with glass would be a great juxtaposition to the boxy bed.

Ok, now that you know all about platform beds and how to decorate with a platform bed, are you ready to see my seven savvy favorites?

    Hi!
I absolutely love platform beds and am looking for one. Unfortunately I live in Europe, so do you have any European websites that sell platforms?
