If you have a round dining table and you’re wondering how many chairs are supposed to fit around it, then this post is for you. I’m covering all the basics so you can figure out the seating capacity for your round table.
Before we get into it, we need to talk about a few factors you should consider…
First, how wide are your dining room chairs? And do they have arms? Chairs with arms will take up more space than chairs without.
Second, does your table have legs that interfere with where the chairs can be placed?
And third, will you be using it for formal or casual dining? For formal dining, it’s nice to give your guests a little more elbow room, so leave around 30″ of space per person. And for casual or informal dining, 24″ of space per person is recommended.
With that said, let’s get into how many chairs you can fit around a 42″, 48″, 60″, 72″, and 84″ diameter table.
Table Size | Number of seats for casual dining | Number of seats for formal dining |
---|---|---|
42″ | 5 | 4 |
48″ | 6 | 5 |
60″ | 7 | 6 |
72″ | 8 | 7 |
84″ | 10 | 9 |
For a formal meal, a 42″ round table will seat 4 people comfortably. For a casual meal, you can sit 5 people around the table.
For a formal meal, a 48″ round table will seat 5 people comfortably. For a casual meal, you can sit 6 people around the table.
For a formal meal, a 54″ round table will seat 5 people comfortably. For a casual meal, you can sit 6 people around the table.
For a formal meal, a 60″ round table will seat 6 people comfortably. For a casual meal, you can sit 7 people around the table.
For a formal meal, a 72″ round table will seat 8 people comfortably. For a casual meal, you can sit 9 people around the table.
For a formal meal, a 84″ round table will seat 9 people comfortably. For a casual meal, you can sit 10 people around the table.

I hope this post helped you figure out how many chairs will fit around your round dining table!
And if you have an odd-sized table, I have a quick tip:
Take the circumference of the table and divide it by either 24″ (casual) or 30″ (formal) to get how many chairs will fit!
As I mentioned, the number of chairs or seats you can fit around a round dining table will also depend on your dining chairs, so be sure to take that into account.
If you’re on the search for a round dining table, I wrote a post going over a handful of my favorites. I searched hundreds of websites to bring you the best round dining tables at three different price points.
